# Add-ons — what they are and how they work

> Every add-on is free and included. What comes switched on, what you can switch on, and why there is no plan to upgrade to.

Bookodile has two kinds of capability: things that are simply there, and
**add-ons** you switch on when you want them.

The important thing about add-ons: **they are all free, and they are all
included.** There is no plan that unlocks them, no tier, nothing to upgrade to.
An add-on is on or off, and that is the only axis.

One add-on has a running cost: [SMS messages](/docs/sms-messages) is free to
switch on, but every SMS it sends is billed monthly with your plan, because every
SMS costs money to send — so SMS are the one thing that needs a paid plan. They
are billed by use, up to a monthly cap.

## Why switch anything off, then?

Because a dashboard with everything enabled is unusable. A solo tutor does not
need revenue splitting. A gym does not need upsell discounts. The Add-on Store
exists so your screens show the parts of the product you actually use.

Switching one on adds its page to your navigation and its settings to your
settings. Switching it off puts things back.

Add-on pages sit in the sidebar under **More**, below the seven pages most
businesses open every day. One you have just switched on shows above More,
marked **New**, until you open it once; Reviews, Feedback and Waiting list also
come up above More, with a count, while something there is waiting for you.
Search (⌘K) finds every page either way.

## What is always there

These are in every account from the first day, with nothing to enable:

your booking page, the calendar, the bookings list, customers, team members,
services, reminders, reports, multi-branch support, and the embed and QR code.

## What you can switch on

**Filling your calendar** — waiting list, events and classes, announcements on
your booking page and website, campaign tracking.

**Growing each booking** — upsell discounts, discount codes, promotions, gift
vouchers. (Offering extras alongside a service is part of the service itself, not
a separate add-on — the add-on is the discounting of them.)

**Bringing customers back** — reviews, private feedback, Google review requests,
the client return engine.

**Reaching customers by phone** — [SMS messages](/docs/sms-messages).

**Running the business** — payment tracking, revenue split, forecasting, Google
Calendar sync, the [leaderboard](/docs/leaderboard).

## Every add-on has one entry point

An add-on's settings live at one place — `Settings → <the add-on>` — carrying
the on/off switch, its configuration, and a link to its main page. Its main page
links back to those settings.

If an add-on emails your team, it also appears in your personal notification
settings. That is the same switch shown in two places, not two switches that
have to agree.

## Turning one off

Switching an add-on off hides its pages and stops its emails. It does not delete
what it collected. Turn reviews off and your reviews are still there; turn it
back on and they reappear.

Two exceptions worth knowing:

- **Publishing reviews is a separate switch** from collecting them, and turning
publishing on publishes everything you have already collected.
- **Payment tracking is bounded by when you enabled it**, so it does not
retroactively mark years of past bookings as unpaid.

## Worked example

A photographer runs with almost nothing switched on: booking page, calendar,
customers, reminders.

They start selling prints as an add-on item at booking time, so they enable
upsells. They begin taking studio rentals by the hour, so they enable payment
tracking to keep the numbers straight. They never touch waiting lists, events,
vouchers or revenue splitting, and their dashboard never mentions them.

The bill does not change, because none of this is what the bill is based on.

## Limits

- **Add-ons cannot be enabled per branch selectively** in every case — check the
  add-on's own settings.
- **Add-ons are part of Settings.** Only someone whose role can open the
settings area can switch them, change their settings or use their tools, such
  as vouchers and discount codes.
- **An add-on switched off keeps its data** but stops acting on it, including
  its scheduled emails.
